SURABAYA – In a momentous event underscoring a new era of public service, two distinguished female politicians from East Java, Nia Kurnia Fauzi and Lia Istifhama, have been honored with significant accolades, reaffirming their profound impact on the legislative landscape. These awards are not merely tokens of appreciation but a testament to their dedicated efforts in championing public welfare.

At the prestigious Legislatif Jatim Awards 2025, Nia Kurnia, a prominent member of the Sumenep Regency DPRD from the PDI Perjuangan faction, was distinguished as the Best Regency Legislator throughout East Java. Her consistent advocacy for public services and social welfare set her apart from thousands of her peers. This recognition highlights her effective grassroots approach and unwavering commitment to addressing the community’s pressing concerns.

Similarly, Dr. Lia Istifhama, a senator from the DPD RI, received the esteemed Apresiasi Legislasi Award 2025, becoming the sole DPD RI representative to be granted this provincial honor. Lia was specifically recognized for her “Best Performance in Bridging Communication between Central and Regional Governments.”

The Imperative of Purpose-Driven Politics

Abdul Rochim, the Director of News at JTV, articulated that the awards were designed to commend legislators who authentically serve the public interest. “This recognition is for legislators who are truly present for the community. They do not merely fulfill formal functions but actively strive to translate public aspirations into actionable policy,” he stated.

Lia Istifhama’s success is a direct result of her strategic efforts to transform her DPD RI office into an accessible platform for public discourse. She is widely known for her persistent advocacy on critical issues, including gender equality, grassroots empowerment, and the cultivation of social capital. She eloquently articulated her philosophy, stating, “Politics, for me, is a space for utility and service, embodying the principle of khoirunnas anfauhum linnas—the best of people are those who are most beneficial to others.”

Furthermore, Lia emphasized the crucial need to maintain public trust in democratic institutions. She urged her colleagues to actively safeguard the public’s confidence by ensuring that their aspirations are genuinely represented. She also highlighted the importance of aligning national-level international agreements, such as the Indonesia-European Union Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IEU-CEPA), with robust regional development strategies.
